Set x to a random ball for testing, with a midpoint of at most prec bits and exponents of at most mag_bits bits: a finite ball, an exact number, a ball with radius about 2^{-\mathit{prec}} times the midpoint, such a ball that is certainly positive, a ball with independent midpoint and radius (possibly very wide), and a ball that may have an infinite or NaN midpoint or an infinite radius.
