Set res to the max norm \max_{i,j} |a_{ij}|, the 1-norm (largest absolute column sum) \max_j \sum_i |a_{ij}|, the \infty-norm (largest absolute row sum) \max_i \sum_j |a_{ij}|, or the Frobenius norm (\sum_{i,j} |a_{ij}|^2)^{1/2}. The ring must provide absolute values, comparisons and (for the Frobenius norm) square roots; the result is an element of R.
